The momentum to legalize recreational cannabis in New Jersey continues to grow.
Adding fuel to speculation that New Jersey could be the next state to legalize recreational marijuana, incoming governor Phil Murphy has selected Pete Cammarano as his chief of staff, The Record reported.
Cammarano founded the New Jersey Cannabis Industry Association – which campaigns for adult-use legalization in the Garden State – earlier this year.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Murphy pledged while running for office that he would legalize rec cannabis, possibly within his first 100 days in office.
- If New Jersey legalizes adult use through legislation, it would be the first state to do so, although Vermont also is in the running to do so.
- State Sen. Nicholas Scutari, the main proponent of a marijuana legalization bill for New Jersey, expects to see movement on his bill early in Murphy’s first term. Murphy takes office in January.
- Cammarano’s MJ trade group was joined in the cannabis push this month by the New Jersey Marijuana Retailers Association.
