School nurses in Colorado could soon administer medical marijuana to students

The Colorado legislature has advanced a bill that would allow school nurses to administer medical marijuana to students, writes Calvin Hughes.

While students in Colorado are already permitted to use medicinal cannabis at school it must be administer by a legal guardian or parent

The bill is named after student Quintin Lovato who, along with his mother Hannah, testified that the current regulations are disruptive to their daily lives.

Lovato requires three does a day to manage his epilepsy, which means his parents have to leave work to administer the drug to him at school. Lovato also claimed that it drew unwanted attention from other students.

Allowing school nurses to administer the drug means students can take it more discretely and their parents won’t need to plan their workdays around get their children’s medication regimen.

The bill now moves ahead to a full debate in the House.
